What are the best ways to age well?

The best way to age well involves taking care of both your physical and mental health. Some key strategies include staying physically active, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. It is also important to stay socially connected, keep your brain sharp, and manage stress levels. The Ageing Well policy is a set of strategies, programmes and initiatives designed by governments, organisations and communities to support and enhance the well-being of ageing populations. The NHS Ageing Well Programme is a blueprint for reducing the rising health service demand to support people in their later years. 

In our Ageing Well series, we aim to inform and promote positive outcomes for older people, enabling them to lead healthy, active, social and fulfilling lives.

What is the Ageing Better programme?

The Ageing Better programme, is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. It focuses on improving the quality of life for older adults and addressing the challenges associated with ageing. 

This includes innovative projects and initiatives that enable older people to lead fulfilling lives, stay connected to their communities, and maintain their independence as they age. It provides funding and resources to organisations working to combat issues such as social isolation, loneliness and ageism.

What are the three pillars of ageing well?

The three pillars associated with ageing well are:

Physical Activity – Maintaining and promoting physical wellbeing as you age by adopting healthy lifestyle habits. These include staying active and mobile to preserve strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Mental Stimulation – Preserving mental sharpness, cognitive function and emotional wellbeing throughout the ageing process. This includes activities that stimulate the brain and promote creativity and problem-solving skills.

Social Engagement – Maintaining meaningful social relationships and staying connected to others as you age to help combat loneliness and isolation. It involves participating in social activities and spending time with family and friends. You could also consider volunteering, joining clubs, groups, or organisations and nurturing relationships that provide emotional support and companionship.

What type of training is recommended for older adults?

Older adults should try to do some form of physical activity every day. The NHS recommends you speak to your GP if you have not exercised for some time. You can begin with light activity, such as walking around the home, folding laundry and general housekeeping. What exercises should an elderly person do?

Engaging in regular exercise can help to improve overall health, maintain independence in later years and enhance quality of life. When exercising it is crucial to consider individual health conditions and consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise programme. 

The types of exercises that are often recommended for those in their later years include walking, Thai-Chi, water aerobics, riding a bike, yoga, dancing for fitness, chair-based stretches, gardening, swimming and low-impact aerobics. What is the best exercise for seniors?

It is recommended that elderly people exercise regularly to help them age well. In later years, low impact exercises that focus on flexibility, strength, balance and cardiovascular health are a good choice. 

The type of exercise will depend on health, fitness level and personal preference. Exercises that are generally well-suited for older adults include walking, resistance training, swimming, water aerobics, yoga, pilates, tai chi, cycling and golf. Functional exercise is any exercise that helps you with everyday activities, such as picking up something heavy, or reaching up to put an object on a shelf.  Some examples of functional exercises include squatting, lunges or jumping jacks. What are the 7 functional exercises for training?

There are seven functional movement patterns we can make with our bodies. Fitness training that focuses on the muscles used in these patterns can make everyday activities easier and safer as we age. A full body, functional workout, is a pattern of exercises that help to train the human body to be able to complete everyday tasks. Longevity refers to the concept of living a long and extended life. An individual’s longevity can be influenced by their genetics, lifestyle choices, access to healthcare, socio-economic conditions and environmental factors.

What are the Blue Zones?

The term “Blue Zones” refers to specific regions around the world where people are known to live longer, healthier lives. These areas have been identified through demographic and epidemiological research as having higher concentrations of centenarians (individuals aged 100 or older) and a lower prevalence of age-related diseases. 

The concept of Blue Zones was popularised by the author Dan Buettner, who conducted research to identify and study these longevity hotspots. The recognised five Blue Zones include the Greek island of Ikaria, the Okinawa Island in Japan, the mountainous region of Barbagia in Sardinia, Italy, the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and the Loma Linda community in California, USA.

Research shows that these Blue Zones share common lifestyle characteristics that are believed to contribute to the longevity of their residents. Does the UK have any Blue Zones?

There are five main blue zones in the world, where it’s said that the healthiest people live.  Although none of these regions fall within the UK, there are some areas where people are more likely to live to over 100, according to the Office for National Statistics.  These areas are mainly coastal, and include Bournemouth, Bognor Regis, Exmouth and Axminster.

Is London a Blue Zone?

The Blue Zones are Loma Linda in California, United States, Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, Sardinia in Italy, Ikaria in Greece and Okinawa in Japan. People living in the Blue Zones live the longest lives of people in the world, consistently reaching 100 years of age. London is not currently considered a Blue Zone.

Do Blue Zones drink alcohol?

Many people living in the blue zones, drink alcohol regularly. They drink in moderation, with friends and/ or food and avoid binge drinking.

Do Blue Zones drink coffee?

Yes, many people within the world’s blue zones enjoy at least one cup of coffee per day. An article on the Blue Zones website, Science confirms: coffee can add years to your life. Bluezones.com lists the benefits of drinking coffee. These benefits include; providing essential antioxidants, improving mood, lowering inflammation, lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes and lowering the risk of prostate cancer.

What do Blue Zones eat for breakfast?

It is well documented that the philosophy of the blue zones is to “breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.”  This means that in many of the blue zones, the biggest meal of the day is eaten at breakfast. The blue zones website has lots of good breakfast ideas, however a good rule of thumb would be a meal that includes a good source of protein, carbohydrates such as vegetables or beans, and healthy fats such as nuts, seeds or oils. The Blue Zones were first mentioned in an article by Dan Buettner, published in National Geographic magazine in 2005. To identify the blue zones, Dan and his team used epidemiological data (information about diseases in one region), census information and field studies.

Blue zones specifically look at the areas in the world where high levels of centenarians live.  The blue zone studies look at the lifestyle factors that contribute to people living over 100. Other longevity studies tend to focus on genetics or biological factors.

How do Blue Zone lifestyle factors impact cognitive function?

According to the NHS, being sedentary and being overweight can both lead to health complications that are then linked to dementia, such as type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.  As some of the healthy habits of the blue zones are to move naturally, stop eating when 80% full and lean towards a plant based diet, adopting these lifestyle factors could have a positive impact on cognitive function.

Why are social interactions important for good health?

A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health reported that the more people socialised, the longer they lived. Scientists looked at the health, lifestyle habits and social activity of 28,000 with an average age of 89. They looked at those who socialised occasionally, monthly, weekly and everyday and found that people in any of these groups lived longer than those who did not socialise at all.

Surveys and questionnaires to self-report levels of well-being and life satisfaction can be used, or by using quantifiable and measurable data related to different aspects of life. Some common approaches to measuring quality of life include:

  • Measuring an individual’s perceived health status and its impact on their overall quality of life.
  • Measuring the quality of life in terms of social, economic and environmental factors. 
  • Determining access to cultural and recreational activities and educational attainment.
  • Assessing an individual’s overall satisfaction with life, such as work, relationships and health.

What are the four types of quality of life?

The four main quality of life domains are physical, psychological, social and environmental. These all interact with and influence each other, contributing to an individual’s overall wellbeing and satisfaction with life. 

  1. Physical quality of life covers overall health, nutrition, sleep quality and physical fitness. It focuses on an individual’s physical health and functioning. This includes the presence of chronic illnesses or disabilities, access to healthcare services and the ability to perform daily activities without limitations.
