Ageing well – Blue Zone areas of the world

The New Year has long been associated with plans to get fitter and healthier with many people keen to increase their healthspan so they can live a longer and healthier life.

Researchers have identified several areas of the world where people already achieve this and live for longer than average. Known as Blue Zones, these regions have been studied closely and offer valuable insights. As part of our Ageing Well series, we look at these Blue Zone areas of the world and what we can learn from them.

What are Blue Zones?

Blue Zones are areas identified by researchers where people consistently live longer than the global average, often reaching their 90s or even 100s in remarkably good health. These places include Sardinia in Italy, Okinawa in Japan, Loma Linda in California, Nicoya in Costa Rica, and Ikaria in Greece. While these communities are scattered across the globe, they share common lifestyle traits that support both physical and mental well-being.

Why do people live longer in Blue Zones?

Researchers have found that people in Blue Zone areas of the world have everyday habits that make a big difference. These daily activities include:

  • A natural approach to exercise: In Blue Zones, people stay active without structured workouts. They walk, garden and do manual tasks as part of their daily routines. This consistent, low-impact movement helps keep their bodies strong and mobile.
  • Healthy eating: Diets in Blue Zones are typically plant-based, featuring lots of vegetables, beans, and whole grains, with occasional small portions of meat or fish. Eating in moderation and avoiding processed foods also play a big role in their health.
  • Strong social connections: Loneliness can negatively affect health as we age, but people in Blue Zones prioritise family and community. Spending time with loved ones and staying socially engaged helps reduce stress and improve mental well-being.
  • A sense of purpose: Having a reason to get out of bed each morning is common in these regions. Whether it’s caring for grandchildren, working on a passion project, or helping in the community, purpose gives life meaning and motivation.

Can we create our own Blue Zone?

By adopting the healthy habits of Blue Zone areas of the world, we can take meaningful steps toward ageing well here in the UK.

You might find it helpful to start with a few small changes; incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet, take the stairs rather than the lift and arrange to meet up with friends or join a club. Even small changes can make a big difference over time.

Living a long and fulfilling life is about making sustainable choices, it’s daily habits that support our bodies and minds. By taking inspiration from these places, we can all take steps to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.
